Weekly Messenger Header

Hello Cougar Families,

I hope everybody had a nice weekend and was able to enjoy this beautiful September weather. I’d like to take a moment to discuss an important topic, School Safety, and how we here at EHS work to ensure a safe and secure school environment. From the district level down to individual classrooms, safety is the top priority at Jeffco Public Schools. Beginning with our Standard Response Protocol (SRP), each teacher and student participates in several safety drills over the course of the school year to prepare them for an emergency event. These include fire, lockdown, and evacuation drills. Below you will see our SRP protocol as it is posted in every classroom. Each room contains supplies and resources necessary to sustain students in the event of an extended lockdown event. If you would like more information on our drills and how they are conducted, please let us know.

Next, our Campus Supervisor Team is one of, if not the most well-regarded team in Jeffco Public Schools. In fact, our team conducts training on behalf of the district for new hires. Campus Supervisors are trained to monitor the campus environment, to consistently monitor the entrances and exits of the building, to actively supervise students in common areas, and to look for and respond to any threats on campus. Most importantly, our Team looks to form positive relationships with our student body, to get to know the students they are protecting, and liaison with our school leadership and counseling team for the purpose of proactively supporting the student body. Last year, we invested in a permanent 4th member of the Campus Supervisor Team. Next time you’re on campus, please introduce yourself to Tammy, Bill, Dean, and Mike and feel free to ask them any questions you may have about their role or campus safety in general.

With regard to preventative measures, it is our philosophy that a positive, supportive and responsive school climate is the most powerful tool we have as educators. However, we also invest in technological infrastructure to support school safety as well. All entrances and exits to our building are equipped with smart alarms. We maintain just over 40 security cameras that cover both the interior and exterior of our building. Finally, as you many of you have surely experienced, all visitors to the building are checked in by a Campus Supervisor and processed through a visitor background system.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information and understand the school safety philosophy of Evergreen High School, the roles and responsibilities of the folks who are dedicated to this mission, and the tools we use to support this vitally important responsibility. Again, if you have any questions or would like any more information, feel free to reach out.

Looking forward to a fun Homecoming Week! Go Cougs!

Brandon Brekke and EHS School Leadership

Start Planning for TEST FEST on Wednesday, October 10

For many years, EHS has used the October National PSAT/NMSQT testing date to administer multiple tests.  EHS calls this day TEST FEST.  Students will be taking the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade PSAT tests on Wed., Oct. 10.  All of these tests are used to identify college readiness, and we use the results in our academic counseling process to help determine proper academic placement in classes.  The National Merit Scholarship is awarded to a small amount of students every year to help them fund their college experience.  In fact, the PSAT is sometimes referred to as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).  Three benefits of taking the PSAT are—

  1. Since the junior year is the only year that students can qualify for the National Merit Scholarship, they might want to give it a practice shot during the sophomore year.
  2. It helps students connect with colleges.
  3. It better prepares students to take the SAT.

Test registration has been extended and now closes at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2018.  Students are considered registered when the OPTIONAL fee has been paid online through Jeffco Connect.

Please take note that only students testing attend school on October 10.  Parents do not need to call the attendance line.  Buses will run on a normal schedule.

ON TEST DAY:

  • Students need to arrive by 7:25 a.m. with a calculator and #2 pencils.
  • Freshmen students will be done at approximately 10:45 a.m.Sophomores and juniors will finish at approximately 11:30 a.m.(Students with accommodations will finish at various times.)

As a reminder, all students will take a free PSAT or SAT in the spring as part of our state mandated testing.

A message from the Evergreen Football Program:

Evergreen Cougar Student Body,

Thank you for all of your support in the past and the present and the future for the football program.  We could not perform the way we do without the awesome energy and power that you bring to home games. Mead came to the Cougar Den on Friday night and they had no idea what they were in for with the football team and you the student body.  The team fed off the passion and the energy you brought to the game. We thank you for sticking with us and seeing what the team is capable of with your support.

Thank you again,

The Evergreen High School Football Program

Reminder regarding the 2018-19 Eligibility policy.  The Final Eligibility reports were run on Friday and distributed to the Fall coaches. The athletes who had Fs on Friday are ineligible to compete this week, 9/17-9/22.

ELIGIBILITY POLICY

Evergreen High School has a (no F) policy and will run weekly eligibility grade checks.

A school-wide report is run every Tuesday afternoon to check grades. An automated phone call home will notify parents that their student is on this week’s D and F list. The list of athletes with D and/or Fs is distributed to coaches and the Athletic Director.

Athletes must remain aware of their grades. They need to communicate and work directly with their teachers to get their grades up by Friday.

A Final Eligibility Report is run every Friday afternoon. Student athletes who have any Fs at this time will not be eligible the following Monday – Saturday.

There is no longer a “blue slip” policy. The grades posted on Fridays are the final determination of eligibility for the next week.

Ineligible student/athletes may go to practices and games; however, they may not miss any class time to attend games and may not dress in uniform for games until they have regained eligibility.
