WEEKLY MESSENGER

Hello and Happy Sunday Cougar Families,

Welcome to the first Weekly Messenger from Evergreen High School. This messenger is designed to provide students, parents, and families with important information and updates, as well as some insight into the excellent things happening in and around our building every day.

An important change this year, intended to increase readership of this messenger, is the timing. Rather than Friday afternoons, this messenger will arrive in your inbox on Sunday evenings, when you likely have a little more time and mental energy to consume the information.

Friday morning we held class meetings with all of our students and had the opportunity to speak to them from the heart on topics such as the importance of character, good decision making, and safety and security at EHS. I believe these meetings achieved the intended goal of setting a positive and supportive tone for the year, with a healthy dose of individual accountability and personal responsibility. We hope to see all families at Back to School Night on the 28th from 6-8 pm, and we look forward to an excellent 2018-19 school year with all our wonderful students!

New This Year - STEM Diploma Endorsement

EHS is excited to announce the implementation of a pilot program to earn a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) diploma endorsement. The Colorado legislature recently enacted legislation that allows schools to enhance diplomas with a STEM endorsement that speaks to a student’s achievements and accomplishments in STEM-related areas. The endorsement has very specific requirements regarding number of STEM-related classes, proficiency in math and science, and completion of a STEM capstone project. Information regarding Jeffco’s program can be found at this link. You will need to ask your student to log into their @jeffcoschools Google account to view the document.

Many of our EHS students, as a result of their innate passion for STEM, have either met or are very close to completing more than one of the requirements for the endorsement. We have attempted to identify seniors for whom this opportunity may be of interest based on their recent science and English 12 enrollments. However, some seniors who may be interested in the program may have been inadvertently overlooked. These include seniors who have taken tech-related classes either online or at Warren Tech as well as seniors who will have completed 5 math classes by the end of this year.

Even though your student may be close to meeting the requirements for this endorsement, there will be some additional work, especially in regards to a senior capstone project. Nevertheless, if they have a passion for STEM this may exactly the opportunity needed for senior year inspiration.

If your senior received an invitation at school, has taken additional STEM classes not addressed in our original screening, or has a passion for STEM disciplines, they are enthusiastically invited to attend a brief informational meeting during advisement on Wednesday, August 22 at 8:00 a.m. in Room E-315 regarding the new pilot program. The meeting is an informational session, only, and not a commitment.

A parent meeting will be scheduled in the next couple of weeks for students expressing an interest in moving forward with the STEM endorsement program. I look forward to meeting with both you and your seniors,

Dave Moutoux

Bergen Valley Ceiling Tiles

Over the summer, Bergen Valley underwent renovations that required the removal of their student handcrafted ceiling tiles. They would like to reunite the artwork with the students who had created them. Please contact the main office at Bergen Valley, 303.982.4964, if you would like to pick up the tile that your student had created.

Athletics

All parents may see an OPT-19 Athletic Pass on your student’s list of fees. If you select to pay this fee, your student will receive a pass that they will use to enter regular season Jeffco athletic events without additional charge.

Thank you to the 300+ students and families who navigated successfully through the new online athletic registration process. Student Athletes who are registered for a Fall Sport can now pay the $175 Jeffco Athletic Fee through their Jeffco Connect Account. Follow this link to see the Jeffco Student Fees assessed to your student. (https://jeffcoconnect.jeffco.k12.co.us/) The $175 sports participation fee is required by Tuesday, August 21st.

Students who are interested in playing a Winter sport, it is not too early to contact the coach.
